Building a Professional Website

June 07th, 2010

There is no specific or set way to design the perfect website. Every website is unique in its own way and therefore the design needs to be tailored to meet the needs of the website. For example, you could have a personal website, small business website, or an e-commerce website, all of which require different ground rules for their design. The content in each of these sites would differ greatly and how the specific content is displayed on each site would depend on what type of site it was as well.

What makes a website work, and have good design instead of bad is generally the targeted audience that the website is trying to reach. If the website is designed for the targeted audience in mind than you probably have a good design.

These are a couple of tips for designing your site:

General Website Design

File Sizes: Always attempt to keep your file sizes down. The smaller the file size, the faster the download and the faster your page will load. The longer it takes for your page to load, the more likely that your audience will get frustrated and head elsewhere for what they need.

Screen Sizes: Always keep in mind that although your screen size may be quite large there are always people who are using older monitors. If your website is designed for a screen larger than 800 x 600 pixels you might be missing out on a good chunk of your audience. Designing for a larger screen size than this will result in parts of your website not being seen by others.

Web Design 101

Smaller companies or individuals who run their own company often have a smaller budget and staff. This doesn’t allow for a lot of resources to go towards website development and it also means that you would have to learn all the technology of building a website yourself. The best idea would probably be for you to spend time on what you do best, which would be to run your company.

Don’t be fooled by the “I know a friend of a friend who could build a website for cheap”. A professional website is not created as easily as you would think and for your website to be successful you need someone who will work with you through the entire process and still be there to help you manage all aspect of your website on a regular basis.

Web Design – The Best Tried & True Fonts For Websites

June 07th, 2010

Frequently when I am building a website after the customer has looked at a few revisions, the topic of conversation drifts to the fonts that should be used on the website. This is the time that the fun really starts to begin! Usually the customer has been browsing around Word on their machine and playing with a few fonts there. So the question is put, “Can we have ultra curly school boy graffiti font for all of the headings and…”.

Stop right there! Go no further. The problem is that whilst this font might look stunning on your website, what will it look like when your customers visit your website? And here is the problem and it is preceded with a technical explanation.

When you open a website the style sheets dictate what fonts, or font families, should be used within the various areas of the webpage that you are opening. But all that this code does is to refer the browser to the list of font that you already have installed on your machine. So if you have installed ultra curly school boy graffiti on your machine then you will be able to see that font when you open the page. But, if this ultra fancy font is not installed on your machine, then the default will be used.

So to be safe, when planning what fonts to use on the various elements of the page it is safest to stick to just those fonts that are installed on the majority of machines and will appear roughly the same. Here we are looking at not only the different versions of Windows machines, but also Macs.

This means that the list of fonts that are compatible with the majority of users is very limited. There are plenty of sites that list most of them and allow you to see what they will appear as, but the choice is very limited.

Which is why we then get to a list of standard fonts that we see in use on sites time and time again. Arial, Times New Roman, Verdana, Garamond and so on.

Sadly, this list does mean that the fonts we get to play with are not that exciting, but if you want to be displaying the page as text, then that is the rule that we have to abide by. But, there are alternatives. For example, if you are designing banners, logos and other elements of the page then these can be created as images on your computer and this gives you the freedom to experience any font that you can find on the internet. The downside – well images are not accessible to search engines and accessible readers, so the content of the page cannot really depend on such techniques.

You could use graphics for headers and supply an alt attribute for search engines and those unable to read the graphics if you are desperate to use a fancy font. But, aside from this cheat, the best fonts to use when you are creating a website are those boring and frequently used fonts listed above.

How to Make a Website With Just Notepad

June 07th, 2010

One goal that some people have is to make a whole website with just notepad. Notepad is a simple text editor that comes with Windows. This is found in the accessories folder when looking in your start menu. Technically this can be done with any simple text editor as it’s the exact same process.

Why would someone want to make a website with just notepad?

There is a bit of a challenge to see if you can code your own site by hand. There is a simplicity to doing everything on your own. Some don’t like how the code is messy when using an HTML editor. It’s not necessarily done for the speed.

What do you need to do this?

You will need a text editor like notepad. You will also need a hosting account somewhere and know how to work with an FTP client as well. This will let you upload the pages you make.

You need to learn basic HTML. This is the language you are going to use to write your site and make it appear properly when uploaded to the internet.

Be sure to look up HTML on the internet if you get in trouble. There are specific pieces of code that you aren’t going to know unless you look it up. Just keep a handy guide on hand just in case you can’t remember your HTML.

When you write your files, you can’t save them as text files. This won’t show up properly on the internet. You need save your files as “html” or “htm”. This will keep them in the format that you need to have everything in.

Check for any errors on your coding by opening your saved HTML files in a browser. You will see your changes as you refresh your browser to see what is different now.

Enhance Your Brand Value With a Great Logo Design

June 07th, 2010

Logos, as we all know gives visibility & identity to a brand. It’s not an easy task to accomplish and therefore we see companies spending millions of dollars to hire best logo designers who would do the job for them. In an age, when most businesses have some degree of presence on the World Wide Web, it’s essential to have a customized corporate logos design to enhance company’s online personality without which the process of branding would be ineffective. Hence, to make your company’s brand competitive in the market the logos design representing the brand must be strong.

As mainstream media becomes less and less attractive, proper branding and custom logos design have attained a great deal of importance. A good logo enhances the brands recall value. It helps companies to break through the clutter. If you are thinking of buying a portable music player, in all probability it is the symbol of Apple that will flash before your eyes. It’s the logo of the company that would instantly help you to relate & recall the iPod. And creating such a logo is a professional’s job as it represents company’s profile and its attitude. But some organizations, instead of employing best logo designers, try and cut costs by either designing it on their own or using the services of some freelance graphic design designers. This approach can sometimes backfire.

• Without a professionally designed logo the business would give an unprofessional look to an outsider. It could also mean that the business is not stable and cannot achieve the benchmarks of quality that the client expects.

• An unprofessionally designed logo can also mean that you, as an in charge of the business, are not focused on its customers and do not care about the way your business portrays itself.

For creating a good corporate logos design, one should keep the following points in mind.

• A complex looking design does not mean that logo would serve its purpose. A good logo must be simple making it easier for people to recollect.

• Always hire a professional to create custom logos design. You won’t be designing your logo every month. It’s a one time investment. It’s the only way to create an impression on your target audience. Go with all guns blazing because if you succeed then it will reap benefits for years to come.

Logo Design – What Businesses Should Look For

June 07th, 2010

Graphic design industry today relies a lot on the marketing and advertising needs of the small businesses. In fact small businesses contribute more to the industry than large corporations. However, there are hundreds and thousands of design companies competing to get these businesses. On the one hand it benefits the small businesses as a consumer, on the other hand it creates quality issues and poorly designed graphics or logos.

Small businesses need to be smart about making decisions. With limited resources there is very little that they can afford and if this amount is not used wisely it may affect the overall business performance adversely.

One problem that small businesses face is to find a quality logo service and get them to design a uniquely wonderful logo design. Due to the huge competition among logo companies, the services they offer range from free to platinum packages. Each of them claims to be the best and each of them promises to deliver what others can’t do.

What small business owner should need to realize that the internet has empowered them to make smart choices. Comparing the services is not that big a deal, but finding out the quality service is still a time consuming task. There are a certain things that when taken care of can assure that you get a better quality logo design.

Start with the prices, the cheap logo design does not necessarily mean a bad logo. Sometimes cheap logo design companies can really do a high quality job. Also keep in mind that highly priced service does not guarantee high quality service. An overly priced logo design could be a cheap rip-off of some famous logo designs already circulating in the market.

After the prices compare the quality, well to easy this procedure most logo design companies showcase their work in portfolios or galleries hosted on their websites. You need to browse them thoroughly don’t just visit the main page of the gallery, dig deeper. You will see these logos now you don’t need to be an art critic to realize that they have talent for presenting brilliant ideas in small images. If all their logos look stereotypical then they are probably not very good at their job.

Customer testimonials are another good way to find out more about the quality of a logo design service. Some logo companies provide information about their previous clients on their website by linking to the client’s websites. You can then email those clients and ask more about the quality of service and level of satisfaction they got by hiring that logo company.

Support is an important issue, a good online service provider whether it be a logo company, a web design or a graphic design company; they are trustworthy if they have a good customer support system. This system should have email and chat support, 24 hours helpline, and online support forums or knowledgebase or FAQs.

The key to a high quality logo design is the collaboration between you and the designer once you have hired them to do the job. If you can’t collaborate and communicate with the designer there is little or no hope that you will get a better design.

Professional Looking Websites – Things to Consider in Making One

June 07th, 2010

If you want to bring your business online, or you want to make money online and start with a professional looking website, it is important to know what you need. Indeed, even if you don’t know much about the technical aspect of creating websites, it is important that you know the elements of professional looking websites so you will know what you want to put up.

If you want to leave this aspect to the experts, you can always hire freelance website designers who are knowledgeable on this matter, but of course, you have to consider the following.

- Template. Choose a professional looking template to begin with. Unless your business is on the creative side and you want your site to be as artistic as possible, then you can however go with it. If you opt for free templates, you can actually find a lot of them online at no cost.

- Colors. Choosing the colors of your website is also an important consideration. To make your website professional looking, you have to stick with colors that are not too glaring such as the neon ones or very bright red. It is important that colors do not make your website look dull but it is also important not to make it too glaring that people would not want to explore the pages. Make sure also that you have a website motif -and make it consistent throughout your web pages for it to have continuity.

- Navigation tools. Of course, you want to put up a website that can make online readers stay longer so they will more likely place an order for your products and services and one thing that can make them browse for more is to make your website user friendly. Professional looking websites are those that are easy to navigate and have tools that are easy to use.

- Make sure you have your contact information posted on your site. One of the important things to keep in mind if you want to bring your business online is to establish trust among your customers and your potential customers. One way to do that is to assure them that you can be reached any time that they need answers to their questions by posting your business phone number or email, or some ‘contact us’ information on your website. It is also important to have a customer service page to help your customers for aftersale support.

- Make your site informative and easily accessible. Add newsletters, online application forms and surveys, as well as general information that you may want to share to your potential customers. Of course, the more information that they will know, the more they will think of purchasing your product and availing of your services.

Keep in mind that making professional looking websites will leave an impression to your online readers that you are professional, yours is a business that can be trusted, and that, they can be in good hands if they patronize your business.

Website Designers – Professional Creative Services

June 07th, 2010

As the internet continues to grow and evolve, people are facing many new opportunities to make a name for themselves. Websites are a great way to get your information out there and show people what you have to offer. However, they are only effective if they are well designed by professional website designers. If you’re looking for the best professional creative services on offer, you need to make sure that you consider all of the elements that go into choosing the right company to work with.

For starters, you need to find reputable services with experience in the industry. Website designers do not become professionals overnight, and the more experience they have, the more they can do for you. Take a minute to look at projects that they’ve done in the past, read customer testimonials, and learn about their company or the individual web designers themselves. Just make sure that you feel that you know everything that you need to know so that you can make the best decision for your needs. Another thing to look at is the cost of the services versus the included features. What you get for the price you have to pay is important.

That said, many people make the mistake of considering cost alone when they deal with professional website designers, and this is not an effective way of choosing. You have to compare the prices to the services that you get so that you can choose the design firm that gives you the most for your money. Once you’ve found a company that has a great reputation and offers you a good deal on the services that you get compared to their costs, you will be much closer to starting your design project. However, you still need to talk to the companies and get a feel for what they can offer you by asking for a consultation or quote of their services.

Getting all of this information about different website designers might seem like a lot of hassle, but it is well worth the effort. When your website turns out to be a top-quality site that gets a lot of interest, you will be grateful that you took the time to figure everything out. You can’t just hire the first person that you find, because you will never know what type of work they are capable of or the quality of their finished products. Always plan ahead and take the time to research your options to find the best solutions for your web design needs.

Having a website is just your first step and you still have to move on to the next step of optimizing your website.

Optimizing your website means making it visible to the most number of audiences you can get for your website, and remember it is not just about getting audiences to your website. It is important to be able to get online visitors that can also be converted to sales and profit. Of course, that is what you want for your business.

Online, you can reach out to the most number of potential customers by optimizing your website and that means climbing on top of the search engine results page to be seen by everyone online. To help you make your website visible, here are a few things that will help you with your goals.

- Make sure your site is professional-looking. If you want a business website, make sure the design represents your business well but also take into consideration a user-friendly website. Of course, you don’t want to frustrate your potential customers with a nice website but a slow-loading and difficult to navigate website.

- Use keywords and key phrases in your website. Keywords are crucial in optimizing your website as these will direct your potential customers and clients to your business’ website. Make sure you choose the right keywords and phrases that best describes your site or your business. This way, you will be ensured that the people who are redirected to your website are those who are really looking for your business and those who are intending to buy or avail something out of your products and services.

Also keep in mind to be specific. Broad keywords and phrases do not only mean tougher competition but also costly advertising. If you want to be cost-efficient and smart with your advertising, you don’t have to waste your money on broad keywords. Go for the specific ones that can really bring customers to your site. If you are new to the concept of having your niche and having your keyword lists, you can always seek assistance from internet marketing experts around the web. Just make sure you get someone who is legitimate and an expert.

- Make your site updated. Market your website to people online by providing fresh content every now and then. In the fast-paced online world, it is important that you also keep up with it by making your business current and fit to the generation of today.

If you want to be seen online, one effective way to do it is to advertise in the search engine paid listings. This will make your site visible to most people and with proper keyword choices, you can actually get the target visitors to come to your site.
