Protect Your Home Even When You’re on Vacation

May 27th, 2010

It’s getting that time of year, where we all are going to be leaving home for vacation at some point. Let’s talk about some things you need to make a priority before you leave the house for the weekend or the week.

*One of times your home is left most vulnerable is when we are off on vacation because we are going to be gone for an extended period of time weather its a week or a weekend. One thing crooks look for is mail or newspapers piling up – this sends a definite message no one is home. Ask neighbors or relatives in town to get these things for you.

*If you have a pet ask someone to go inside open up your curtains or turn on the television or lights while they they take pet for a walk or feed them, this just makes enough of a scene to deter crooks.

*If you have an alarm system make sure the person understands how to arm and disarm it and who to call if they cant disarm it.

*If you have no one to watch the house make it a point to stop mail and newspaper delivery for the time you will be away.

*If you have plants on your porch make sure to ask someone to water them while your gone, slowly dying plants is another indicator for crooks that no one is home.

*We always say if you can’t find anyone to watch your home and none of these apply to you, we say go with good old noise makers. No not party favors, invest in things that make noise because even though they they crooks are getting smarter they really aren’t. Investing in a alarm system wired or wireless and even a simple window alarm will deter anyone because to them that sound your device will make means cops are coming. Best thing is you can do this for very little.

Adventure Travel – New Jersey

May 27th, 2010

New Jersey is one of the most under rated adventure travel destinations. The area offers looks at delicate environments, historic sites, the sound of the surf and wildlife not to be missed.

Along the New Jersey Shore Cape May will take you back to victorian times with buildings from the 1600’s. If you hang out along main street it is a bit too touristy. So take a walk along the back roads to get a feel for the area to take you back to a simpler time.

The beach here is clean and a walk along the ocean or a day of playing in the surf can sooth your spirit. Travel inland just a short distance and visit the winery in the area and sample the grapes in the area.

The Maritime Forest once ran all along the Atlantic Ocean. Some of the last remaining stands of the forest can be found at Barnegat Lighthouse State Park. This area is an important feeding site for migratory birds. You can hike a short trail not even a quarter of a mile and view the birds, box turtles and deer that inhabit the forest.

The New Jersey leg of the Appalachian Trail is one that can take you into the wilderness and through either rough or not so rough terrain. Picking rough terrain usually will get you away from most people and for the adventure traveler it can raise your adventure level.

Beaver Pond Trail is strewn with lava rocks from a volcano that has been dormant for many years. This is bear country and there are scars on the trees giving proof as you hike along. The hike will take you across High Point Mountain giving you views to the Atlantic Ocean. Traveling through wetlands and at the end of the trail you will find the beavers engineering masterpiece the pond.

High Point State Park Monument Trail offers a less taxing hike, for 3 miles you will travel through the forest, see lots of mushrooms, and enjoy the feeling of being in a magical place. Following the trail to the end you will get a view of the Delaware River flowing to the Atlantic Ocean.

Saw Mill Lake is a great place to set up your home base while staying close to the Jersey Shore. Waking everyday in the woods the lake is man made but looks like a natural lake surrounded by the woods.

Leave the city noise and enter New Jersey backwoods and let your adventure begin.

Adventure Travel in New Hampshire

May 27th, 2010

Adventures in New Hampshire

New Hampshire adventure travel will take you from the north woods to local wineries, hiking on the Appalachian Trail, to sandy beaches on the lakes and Atlantic Ocean. You may think that because of New Hampshire’s size it doesn’t have much to offer to the adventure traveler you would be mistaken. Small does mean that there is adventure around every corner.

White Mountain National Park is the best place for a true adventurer to make camp and relax awhile. Enjoy a tube ride down the Saco River where you can lazily sit back on a tube and relax, or get the adrenaline rush through the rapids as your tube goes up and over.

The Lupines here when in bloom are undeniably the most beautiful I have seen. The more you hike around the more you will find the obscure water fall, the small brook, spot that bald eagle or moose and feel like you have had a true adventure.

The scenic Costal Byway is only 18 miles long you can take hours exploring the area. The oldest working port Portsmouth retains most of its buildings from the 1800’s. Portmouth will take you back to a old time working port.

New Hampton Beach one of the number three cleanest beaches in the nation. This area is very popular offering visitors a sandy clean beach, fireworks and movies right on the beach during summer months.

The sand sculpting competition is by invitation only. This is an annual event and something you will want to check out with 15,000 dollars in prize money to the winner the competition can get heated and creative. You will wonder how someone could make something so beautiful out of just sand.

If you enjoy the culinary arts the Hampton Beach Seafood Festival is not to be missed. Providing you with treats for your tongue, ears and eyes. This festival gets over 150,000 visitors so you will need to plan ahead a little bit a great place to have a little dinner with music.

If large crowds are not your idea of adventure in food then you will enjoy traveling to the Southern part of New Hampshire and visiting wine country. Visit the Candia Vineyards an area that has been tilled and cultivated since the early 1700’s. The wine made here has won numerous awards and don’t you just love wandering through the vines?

Small places can surprise you and if it is adventure travel you seek give New Hampshire a try and it will have you coming back for more next year.

Discover Lake Naivasha

May 27th, 2010

The story of Lake Naivasha is one of mixed fortune. In the past century alone it has dried up completely, effectively disappearing, then returned to existence through heavy rainfall, has been used for irrigation for local flower farms and had encountered problems from pesticide and fertiliser seepage. It has even faced ecological interference from a breed of large aquatic rodent, the coypu, which originally escaped from a nearby fur farm!

In response to such issues, this national park has since been declared a Ramsar site (wetlands of international importance for migratory wildfowl), and is the focus of various initiatives such as the Lake Naivasha Riparia Association and the Elsamere Conservation Centre. With this help, the Lake is now thriving, and draws visitors from all over the world, as well as locals from Nairobi in search of a bit of peace!

The Masai people have long deemed the Naivasha area to be prime grazing land, and the name Naivasha itself is actually a misspelling of the Masai name Nai’posha, meaning “rough water,” a reference to the strong winds which can stir up the lake’s waters in the afternoons. This shallow freshwater lake is 12km across, fringed by feathery papyrus and yellow-barked acacia, and surrounded by marsh and lagoons.

The very fact that this particular body of water is one of only two freshwater lakes in the Rift Valley group means it attracts various birds of prey with its many fish. The magnificent Fish Eagle can be spotted swooping from the highest treetops to snatch a fish from the lake, or even from the beak of another unfortunate bird! You’ll certainly remember the shrill, haunting territorial call of this powerful predator. Another common sight is of a Great White Pelican diving below the lake’s surface to emerge moments later with a bucket-like billfull of fish. You might even see a bright and showy Pied Kingfisher!

The forests in particular are a hive of activity for hundreds of other bird species, such as the grey-capped warbler, spectacled weaver and the red-billed firefinch. This truly is a haven for bird lovers. And for the rest of you, there are the striking black and white colobus monkeys swinging from the treetops, giraffe picking the choicest leaves from the tallest branches, and solid, stoic buffalo wallowing in the swamps.

Within the park are a couple of separate sanctuaries which are well worth a visit. The Crater Lake Game Sanctuary is a volcanic crater lake situated in the eastern side of the park. In this tiny park dwell over 150 bird species, plus gazelle and zebra, and the buffaloes lurking in the woods will only make a walking or horse-riding safari there even more exciting! The Crescent Island Wildlife Sanctuary, lying in the western part of the lake itself, is a great place to organise a boat trip, where you can watch hippos lazing in the water and marsh. Do remember to keep a respectful distance! Or, you could simply wander amongst the acacias, spotting giraffe and waterbuck. Watch out for the huge pythons though!

Naivasha is accessible by main road, and is just over an hour’s drive away from Nairobi, and you tour operator should be able to arrange a transfer for you. The climate in this part of Kenya is generally gentle, rarely surpassing 28 degrees Celsius, and the rainy seasons are from March to end of May, and October to the end of November.

Ziara safaris specialises in creating custom and private tour itineraries for Kenya safaris so that you see all of the most amazing sights as well as staying in the best luxury accommodation.

Is Africa Volunteering All Mud Huts and Malaria?

May 27th, 2010

If you think about volunteering in Africa, it’s unlikely that you think about comfortable rooms, a barbeque by the pool at the end of the day, or a stroll along a golden sandy beach. In fact that’s exactly what you could expect. It’s Africa, of course, but it’s not all mud huts and malaria!

African volunteering organizations realize that the modern volunteer isn’t necessarily going to be attracted by a tent in the jungle. For some people that’s precisely what they’re looking for – and if you are one of them there is ample opportunity to get out on an African safari. On the other hand, after you’ve been doing volunteer teaching, medical assistance or helping conserve African wildlife all day – and you’re tired – it’s quite reasonable to want a shower, a couple of drinks to unwind and, when you are ready for it, a comfortable bed.

What you get depends to a large extent on where you go. In Cape Town, volunteers can stay in a comfortable house with a pool. A short walk away there’s a shopping mall and cinema. In Mozambique there’s no cinema but the back door opens onto the beach. In Zimbabwe, African wildlife volunteers stay in a thatched farmhouse by a like. Volunteering in Africa – like Africa herself, is full of diversity. The one thing you won’t find is bare earth and rough blankets – unless you go looking for them on purpose!

The important thing, of course, is the immensely valuable work that is done by people volunteering in Africa, whichever area of assistance and adventure you choose. For most people the accommodation is secondary, but it’s still nice to know that although it’s not the Hilton, you won’t be expected to be uncomfortable either.

If you want to know more about volunteering in Africa you need to check out YourAfricanAdventure.com. Loads of info to help answer your questions and free, one-to-one help if you need it.

Two Extremely Popular London Taxis

May 27th, 2010

London is one of the most beautiful and happening cities in the world. Tourists from different parts of the world visit here to explore its beauty and charm. If you are planning to visit London this vacation, make sure that you book London taxis ahead of time. Taxis act as an important link in the London’s transportation network.

Taxis in London can be broadly categorised into two parts:

  • The most famous and legendary Black Cabs
  • The not so famous and common Mini Cabs

The Black Cabs:

The Black Cabs of London are highly popular all over the world for providing excellent taxi services. Although, they are popularly known as Black taxis, not all of them are in black colour. The modern cabs come in a wide variety of colours with advertisements imprinted all over.

If you want to hire it, just wait on the pavement and look for a taxi with yellow coloured ‘For Hire’ sign written on the top and just raise and wave your hand into the air to stop him. If the cab driver sees you, he will stop beside you.

The drivers of Black Cabs are very reliable because they have to undergo the most stringent Knowledge Test before acquiring the license. It is important for a driver to have proper knowledge of all London routes. They have to memorize each and every street and route, places of tourist attraction and hotels, bus stops, train stations, hospitals, churches or theatres. You seldom have to give advice to the Black texis drivers because of their efficiency in their work.

The Mini Cabs:

The mini cabs make for a great alternative to the conventional black cabs. Actually, the name “mini” is inaccurate because they are bigger than the traditional black texis having a seating capacity of 5 to 8 people. Although, they are cheaper than the black texis, they are not licensed and drivers do not undergo any such knowledge test.

Mini cabs cannot solicit business but they can move in different parts of the city looking for passengers. They are mostly seen in the early mornings looking for business. Usually, women are advised not to board mini cabs.

Hence, if in London, avail the services of these cabs to make your trip comfortable and stress free.

Blowing the Budget in Budapest

May 27th, 2010

There are many ways to backpack Budapest on the cheap, but what if you want to throw caution to the wind and blow your budget entirely? If you’re planning on seeing the sights in style, make sure you double check with the driver of your shuttle from Budapest airport to city, just what the best ways to splash your cash are.

Travel at the Top
Any old car can take you from Budapest airport to city, but if you’re planning on blowing the budget on your holiday then you might as well ensure that your transport is at the top of its game. What could be more stylish than seeing the city from the back seat of a limousine? There are several companies from which you can hire yourself a car and driver in Budapest, so sit back, relax and enjoy the sights in style. Just don’t forget the obligatory wave out of the sunroof to all those who watch you go by. A minibus or car might well be what you need to get from Budapest airport to city, but if you really want to top-range travel, a limousine is the only way to do it.

Spend at the Spa
Nothing screams luxury more than a day out at an exclusive spa, and after flights and the journey from Budapest airport to city, what could be more enjoyable? Bathhouses are a long standing tradition in Budapest. A place where people go to relax, to socialise and even to improve their health, the baths are an important part of everyday life. To bathe in the most comfortable manner however, you will want to head to the Gellert and Szécsény thermal baths, which are renowned for being the most expensive in Budapest. The rules here are that you pay the maximum amount of money on arrival, and if you leave before the maximum allotted time, you may get some of your entry refunded, and that’s just for basic bathing! Should you wish to make the most of the other treatments on offer such as massages and therapies you will have to dig a little deeper. And the most important thing to remember about visiting the Gellert and Szécsény baths? Tipping is the key to getting the best possible treatment.

Eat on the Edge
Once you’ve seen the city from the back of the limo and soothed your aching feet at the spa, you’re bound to have worked up quite an appetite. Why not treat yourself to dinner at one of the most expensive and exclusive restaurants in all of Budapest; airport to city to suburbs, Gundel has earned its reputation. Enjoy a selection of wonderful Hungarian dishes from roasted pheasant to goose liver as you take in the lavish and extremely fancy interior of the restaurant. And if you really want to spend the big bucks, be sure to indulge in plenty of wine from the cellar which is a relic of the restaurant that came before Gundel; though we can’t guarantee that the wine will be quite as old as the cellar itself.

So, if you’re looking to spend, spend, spend all the way from Budapest airport to city, there are plenty of ways to splash the cash.

Gergely Garami is a driver for Shuttle Direct on the Budapest airport to city route. They provide pre-booked shuttles to major destinations all over Europe. Wherever you travel, Shuttle Direct can make sure that you don’t miss your car on your holiday abroad.

La Manzanilla, Mexico – Cheap Eats

May 27th, 2010

One of the many nice things about visiting an off the beaten track vacation destination is tourist pricing has not arrived yet.

While in La Manzanilla you can find lots of delicious and inexpensive food, much of it from food stalls that open only at night. Here are a few of my favorites all priced from $1-$2 dollars each.

Tacos at Chop Chop’s- most evenings this fantastic taco stand is serving to a packed crowd. Don’t bother looking for this place during the day; it is only open at night. They serve tacos asada (grilled beef), chicken, lengua (tongue) and my favorite quesadilla with chorizo. Tacos are served with a selection of salsas and beans.

Pozole, this is a traditional Mexican soup made with hominy, pork or chicken, chilies and spices. It’s topped with shredded cabbage, thinly sliced radishes and a squeeze of lime. Along the main garden you can find at least one or two restaurants serving their version of Pozole, try them all and decide for yourself whose is the best. The restaurants serving Pozole also usually have enchiladas, tacos dorado (fried tacos filled with potatoes), and tostados.

Tortas at Mi Kasita. This restaurant is open for breakfast and lunch and is located on the main street into town, just before you get to the main garden. A torta is a Mexican sandwich, served on an oblong 6-8 inch firm, crusty white sandwich roll, called a bolillo. I like the Cuban Torta which includes a wide variety of ingredients: ham, white cheese, spicy pork, tomatoes and I always go for the jalapeños as well. The bread is toasted and it is a bit messy to eat but very tasty and coming in about $2 it’s a filling lunchtime meal.

Tamales from Juan. Each evening Juan sets out in his tuk-tuk with fresh tamales. You can choose from pork, chicken, poblano peppers or strawberry. If you see him on your side of town on one evening be warned, he won’t be back on the following evening. He can only service half the town each night so he rotates his route. The tamales are around.50 each and 3 is a really big meal.

Beer at the beach. Ok, so technically this isn’t food but when you can get a beer served to you at restaurant on the beach and it costs $1 it needs to be mentioned!

There are many dining options in La Manzanilla, you can definitely spend $50 for two at on of the upscale restaurants in town. If you need to stretch your budget, choosing to eat at the food stalls or simple Mexican owned restaurants will help your money last.

The Family Vacation – Making Your Vacation Affordable

May 27th, 2010

If you’re planning a trip to Las Vegas, you can go in style without breaking the bank. Also, you don’t have to cut out all the fun & excitement just because you’re cutting down on expenses. I’ve got a quick list of things that you can do to make sure that your Las Vegas vacation is a blast, while still remaining affordable.

Choose the correct season. Go during the off season, there’s still tons of attractions, but the hotels will charge you less because they’re trying to compete to bring in new guests. Check prices during the summer months, and you might be surprised what kind of deals you can get.

Travel at the right time. Airfare is significantly less if you choose to travel at the correct time. Choose an off day for the airline, sometime during the week. Don’t travel on the weekends, as those are the times that you will be charged max rate. Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday are going to be your best bet to find good airfare to Las Vegas.

Getting your airfare, hotel and transportation as a complete package can be one way that you can really kick in some savings. Often times the package deals are much cheaper than trying to hobble together a cheap vacation piece by piece. There are tons of companies out there competing to get your money on package deals, so shop around a bit to find some great prices.

The internet is your best friend when planning a vacation. There are so many resources out there that will help you get good deals on hotels, airfare and car rentals. Also, you can plan out the details, such as shows and attractions that you want to visit on the web. Again, there are deals abound, so make sure that you really dig into the resources that are available to you out there.

Ask for discount rates. There are tons of programs out there that allow you to get discounts on things such as plane tickets and hotel rooms. You may even find discounts on meals if you look hard enough. Talk to people about your memberships or frequent flier miles to see what they might offer you in the way of a discount on your expenditures.

See if you’re allowed to get one room for the entire family. Most hotels will do this and it’s much cheaper to get a room with two double beds than going for two with a queen sized in each. Some hotels will charge you per person extra in your room, but you’ll still come out ahead paying an extra $20 per head than getting a whole other room to house your rug rats.

Go to the expensive restaurants at lunch, not dinner. Usually you can find good lunch deals at some of the most notable restaurants in the city. This is a great way for you to get to say you’ve been to all of Las Vegas, and still not break the bank doing so.

Reconsider buying expensive souvenirs. These are some of the most costly expenditures that people come across on their Las Vegas vacation. Consider just living with the photos that you’ve taken as the memories are going to be worth more than a t-shirt or a key chain. If you have children, it may be hard to convince them that they don’t want a t-shirt, so at least reconsider buying a souvenir at every stop, and limit each kid to a certain number, making them choose the ones that they want the most.

Check out tourist magazines. If you’ve ever been on vacation, you know these mags offer a lot of little coupons. If you’ve already planned out your activities, then you might just find that you can get an extra discount in some of these free magazines. If you don’t know what you want to do or if you come across something that offers a better price on a comparable attraction, you may end up changing your plans, and spontaneity can really spice up your vacation.

Don’t order room service. Dining out usually will save you some money. Because restaurants have to compete for your business, you may find that the prices outside your hotel are much much cheaper than what room service will cost you. Never rely on room service when you have an entire cities chef’s at your disposal!

Don’t overdo the gambling. If you’re planning on hitting the casino’s, which most do, don’t over-do it. Set a budget and stick to it rigidly. Get your spouse involved on the budget if you think it’s going to be a problem for you. Whatever you do, don’t lose the mortgage and car payments on the table, & don’t use the plane tickets as part of a loan!

Following these simple tips, you’ll find that you can cut a lot of corners and save hundred on your Las Vegas vacation. Good luck!
