Top 5 Reasons Why You Should Plan a Diving Trip

May 27th, 2010

The Great Barrier Reef is a really awesome place to be in. If you have the chance to book your travel there grab it and you will never go wrong.

Among the many water-based activities that you can do there scuba diving stands to be the most popular. Whether you have never dived before or is already an advanced diver there is something for you at the Great Barrier Reef.

Reason 1: Swimming With The Locals

The locals of the Great Barrier Reef being the various schools of fishes, dolphins, endangered dugongs, huge sea turtles, mollusks, sponges, marine worms, crabs, sea urchins, and so much more. If swimming and actually touching the huge but gentle Potato Cod or feeding sharks does not pique your interest, lets move on to the second reason.

Reason 2: It’s A Jungle Out There

The biodiversity of the Great Barrier Reef can only be rivaled by the rain forests of the Amazon only that instead of trees what you see are corals. There are two types of corals, soft and hard corals and they spread out all over the reef.

While the soft corals are visually spectacular, the hard corals are the reason why there are reefs as it is their skeleton that forms the basis of the 2,900 individual coral reefs scattered all over the area. Both types of corals are important because they provide shelter and nesting ground for other marine life.

Reason 3: The Types Of Reefs You Can See

Just as there are many species of marine life here there are also various types of reefs that you can see at the Great Barrier Reef when you go scuba diving and these are fringing reefs, deltaic reefs, ribbon reefs, and platform reefs.

Fringing Reefs are those found near the mainland or an island while Platform Reefs are those oval shaped reefs that measure anywhere from 3 to 4 kilometers long. A coral cay is a platform reef that has sand accumulations in one section making it stable enough for vegetation and birds.

Deltaic Reefs and Ribbon reefs are only found at the northern portions of the reef. A reef is a collection of tiny polyps and it is hard to imagine that some reef walls are 1,600 feet in thickness.

Reason 4: Everywhere Is Where Adventure Is

Whatever way you use to explore the Great Barrier Reef – land, sky, or water – is an adventure by itself. If you don’t consider riding a quad bike to go around Hamilton Island or being aboard a helicopter to have a scenic view from the sky, or going sea kayaking to secluded beaches of a particular island an adventure travel then I don’t know what would change your mind.

Reason 5: Bucket List

I still have room for one more reason and it is that traveling the Great Barrier Reef is truly a wonderful experience that the BBC includes it in their bucket list of 50 Places To See Before You Die. And rightly so because of the richness of life both in and out of the water and the myriad of colors the reef has, it is simply a wonderful place to see and experience.

Of course before you book your dive, you have to book your place to stay first, Great Barrier Reef Hotels has a listing of some of the top rated hotels to help you with your search. To explore the place you’d need to register to tours offered by the list of the more popular companies at Great Barrier Reef Tours.

Great Barrier Reef Tour Ideas

May 27th, 2010

The Great Barrier Reef is an awesome place to be if you are planning on traveling to tropical beaches. It stretches over 1000 miles along the coast of Queensland Australia and is composed of 3000 individual reefs and 900 islands. In Australia, this place is known as the Blue Outback and this was dubbed by the United Nations as a World Heritage Site in 1981. To the rest of the world the Great Barrier Reef, no matter what it’s called is simply spectacular and awe inspiring.

A lot of visitors to the reef area combine visits to one or more islands and to the mainland of Queensland where towns and parks abound. Depending on the length of your visit, you can stay at two different resorts on two different islands, you can island hop, or you can opt to join live aboard tours where you may be taken to some remote areas depending on the permit of the tour company.

There are many ways to tour the Great Barrier Reef and here are just some ideas guaranteed to make your stay no matter how short it might be a very memorable one.

30 minutes

Got thirty minutes to spare? Go on a thrilling helicopter ride to Green Island but while heading there you will get a scenic view of the reef from the sky. Then be prepared to get blown away by the size and many colors and hues of the reef.

Half Day To A Day

If you have half a day, you can go on a delightfully unique way to explore and see the beauty of some areas of Fitzroy Island which are only accessible by water on a guided sea kayaking tour. This is an opportunity to admire the awesome view from the lighthouse on Little Fitzroy which is a small island near Fitzroy, take pictures, go snorkeling, or just sit on the beach.

Two To Three Days

Choose a specific island at the Great Barrier Reef and enjoy the variety of water and land-based activities that their resorts have to offer. For instance at Hamilton Island you can ride golf buggies or quad bikes as you tour the island, participate in Go-karting races, or you can go bush walking and that is just for land-based activities.

A Week Or More

If you’re not a serious diver you can go to Lizard Island or Hayman Island for your fill of wonderful beaches and hiking trails. On the other hand, if diving is your primary reason for visiting the Great Barrier Reef and you want to experience diving as many places possible, you can go on live aboard tours that travel to specific locations of the reef for days.

What To Bring

Of course no travel is complete without the following items: plenty of water to prevent dehydration, sunglasses to protect the eyes from the glaring sun, sunblock to protect the skin from sunburn, a wide brimmed hat to keep the sun away from the delicate skin of the face and neck, and of course your camera for capturing the moments not the creatures. If you’re wondering about wetsuits and other diving equipment, you have the option to rent them as they are included in the tour package or you can bring your own.

Choosing a good place to stay to give you all the comforts you need is a must. Go to Great Barrier Reef Hotels for hotel information and how to get great rates. When you book tours you have to consider the services offered by the tour company, Great Barrier Reef Tours has a short list to help you out.

Welcome to Colorful Colorado

May 27th, 2010

It all started with one click and two putts as my ‘94 Buick Skylark drove out of the drive way. With high expectations for the trip and very low expectations for my car, we half smiled as we went along are way. Not excited for the 16 hours of driving I had to do, I focused on what fun we would have skiing, hiking, and being burly men with a little too much freedom. 20 hours later, with more caffeine then blood in our systems, and looking like we turned into zombies, we made it to the colorful state of Colorado.

After 15 minutes of slipping and sliding on the Hously’s mountain of a driveway, we made it to our home for the next three days. It’s a beautiful log cabin with a heavenly view over-looking the great thundering Rocky Mountains.

With barely any sleep and barely able to stand, we headed towards the wonderful and magical Winter Park. (Now, I have never skied before but my friend Austin, reassured me that I would be “fine”). After a ten minute ski-lift ride, hills so steep my hands sweat and less oxygen then in a space shuttle; I had a hard time believing him. This was a mountain and I was about to learn how to fly! After a hair raising two times flying down the mountain, I was getting good! My legs, feet, and buns were feeling like someone stomped on me with cleats (or like that scene in Star Wars where the Ewoks released a pile of logs to trip up the evil empire’s walker). The fantastic Mary Hously saved the day with some fabulous home cooking.

Warm bellies and well rested, Austin and I were ready for an adventure, climbing up Birthood Pass. It really should be called Mount Doom or Middle Earth. I heard scientists saying that it’s harder to climb Birthood Pass then it is to climb Mount Everest. I leave nothing to the imagination. Snowshoes? Check. Water? Check. Endurance? Well, we’ll see. After an hour of hiking we said, “What a view so far!” After two hours of hiking we said, “Are we there yet?” After three hours of hiking we said, “I need water, give me some water!” With a half hour left to go we said, “Where’s my oxygen tank?” Finally, after three and a half hours of turmoil, panting, and crawling we made it to the top. We felt like kings of a nation of ants as we looked high and low. It was a spectacular view up top of Birthood Pass.

After we waved goodbye to the Hously’s, the Rocky Mountains and Tom the cat; and as we headed toward home, I couldn’t help but think to myself, what a marvelous adventure it was to visit a great state of beauty and wonder. What a marvel it was to boast in the great freedoms we have, for I am truly touched by the majestic wonders of the earth.

I love writing. I am tying become better at writing. So, I would love some feed back from you the reader. Please comment and let me know how I’m doing, thank you!
